Every year, thousands (and we aren’t exaggerating) of board games are published. They can be learning games, fun games, card games, strategic games, basically any type of game you could think of. They are designed for specific age groups to also include us elder statesmen and stateswomen – the adults.
While some games hit the market (if they’re lucky to hit it in the first place) early in the year, many new games make their appearance as the holiday season gets near. Well, the holiday season is quickly approaching, so we thought we’d lend a hand in finding some new or almost new (with a classic or two tossed-in) board games that should find their way under the Christmas tree this year.
Because there are board games for all shapes and sizes and ages, we are going to break it down into kid’s board games and then adult board games. The only requirement we had when selecting these was fun.
Some of the board games may not be familiar, then again, some of them might be. Let’s first start with the young ones.
KIDS BOARD GAMES
WHY WE LIKE IT – This one is for the real young ones, starting at 4 years of age and up. Designed to develop critical thinking skills for kiddies, Zingo Bingo plays exactly like a bingo game, but instead of numbers, the game uses pictures of various items.
The set-up is simple. You slide the Zinger and out comes two small picture cards. Match them with your Zingo Bingo card and the first full card wins. It doesn’t get any easier though what it does is develop language and matching skills. Great for preschoolers.

WHY WE LIKE IT – Ever jump around the front room as kids pretending the floor was lava? Well, now there is a game based on that same silly, but fun, idea. In this game, kids still get to pretend the floor is lava but instead of jumping on the furniture, they get to jump from colored foam piece to colored foam piece.
The game is played best with 2-6 kids and has a game spinner, 25 colored safety zones, and 27 challenge cards to make lava jumping a lot more exciting. Not only does the game promote fun, but it also gets kids the physical exercise they need. The Floor is Lava can be played outside as well as inside.

WHY WE LIKE IT – If the name doesn’t start your kid’s stomach rumbling then nothing will. Not exactly a board game (since it’s played with cards) we decided to speak on this since the name was a winner.
Taco vs Burrito was invented by a 7-year-old. True story. It was a Kickstarter smash, jumping over its intended goal by a whopping 2,400%. With cards, kids get to have a fun and strategic food fight. The game is easy, quick to learn, and takes about ten minutes to play. Just think of how many games you could get in.
PRICE – $19.99 on Amazon
WHY WE LIKE IT – Classic comes to mind with Guess Who? This board game is the original guessing game from Hasbro. It features the classic tabletop board as well as 24 mystery cards, and 48 face cards.
Ask yes-or-no questions about your opponent’s cards in order to guess who is who. It is simple and fun and offers hours of entertainment.
PRICE – $10.99 on Amazon
WHY WE LIKE IT – One of the biggest and best-selling board games of all time. Hasbro blew it up with Battleship, the 2-player game of strategy and memory.
Set your ships strategically on your playing board and start guessing. G4, F7, J5. Oh man, you sunk my battleship.
PRICE – $14.88 on Amazon
ADULT BOARD GAMES
WHY WE LIKE IT – We could end this discussion simply by stating the title once again. That, in itself, should sell the game and sell them like hotcakes.
Plunder is a pirate adventure game that the whole family can play. You build your pirate ships (and can upgrade them), you wage battles, you find treasures and you conquer islands. You decide how you want to attack the game, as well as the opposing captains.
The games board is never the same as double-sided game tiles shift with each game. There is only enough room for one true Pirate King, make sure you’re it.

WHY WE LIKE IT – Pandemic is one of the most popular board games on the planet. Players have to work together in order to find a way to take out diseases before they take over the world. What a perfect game for today’s COVID environment.
The game takes around 45 minutes to save the world from the four infectious diseases threatening the world. Work together, use your game characters’ skills, be a hero.
PRICE – $22.02 on Amazon. This is actually a rockin’ price as it normally sells for $44.99.
WHY WE LIKE IT – This is another building game. Catan is an island, and this game allows you to trade, build, and settle on the island.
Game players will control their own civilizations as they move across the board to gain victory points. You play with 3-4 players and the game takes around an hour to complete.
PRICE – $35.20 on Amazon. Another solid price as it normally sells for $55.00.
WHY WE LIKE IT – This game can either be for the kitty lover in the family…or the one who doesn’t particularly like cats. This game is a party card game designed for friends and family who are into kittens, explosions, laser beams, and sometimes goats.
Not exactly a board game, but one that is a smash hit, nevertheless. Its 15-minute playing time is good for 2-5 players and can be played time and again. Exploding Kittens also has expansion packs for extended fun.
PRICE – $19.82 on Amazon
WHY WE LIKE IT – Think of dominoes but with colored tiles and shapes. Strategy and forward-thinking are in need with Qwirkle as you try to match tiles with exact shapes and colors.
The more you build, the more points you score. The game takes as long as necessary for you to relieve yourself of all your tiles and also have the high score.
PRICE – $24.95 on Amazon
Obviously, the above-board games, with a couple of card games tossed in for show, don’t even scratch the surface of all the board games on the market. But those mentioned above are true winners and very popular in their own right. Christmas is coming, so we hope that we’ve given a few ideas for kids, adults, and family fun.
