Imagine driving down the interstate in the southern part of the US. You got your windows down, “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd is playing on the radio and you’re enjoying the synchronicity of it all, since you are in fact, in Alabama on the I59. When you look out the window and see the largest iron skillet riding in the back of a truck on its way to Tennessee.

According to Food & Wine, the ginormous skillet had to catch a ride in unconventional ways since it was actually created and put together in the state of Alabama but was designed and built for Lodge, the makers of fine cast iron skills. The 126-year-old company touts itself as the oldest family-owned cast iron manufacturer. And this year, it’s doing something extraordinary.

We are all familiar with various roadside attractions like “The World’s Largest Ball of Twine,” The Country’s Tallest Horse,” or even “The Biggest Pumpkin to Ever Be Grown”. But yup, it seems there is now “The World’s Largest Cast Iron Skillet,” and it now resides at a new Lodge Museum of Cast Iron at the company’s headquarters in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee.

Earlier this year, the spectacular skillet was seen making the trip in the back of a flatbed turning heads and making Twitter headlines. And cast iron fans were super stoked to know that the Lodge Museum of Cast Iron would be home to this massive piece of cookware. However, the museum didn’t open until last week, so we all waited with bated breath until we could get up close and personal to the gigantic pan.

At last, the long wait came to an end this Saturday, October 9 as the Lodge Museum of Cast Iron opened to fans of the brand and southern cooking. Then, the museum doors were opened wide to welcome those from near and far.

Although the museum may not be a destination, but a place to visit on a long road trip (but who knows?), the new locale promises to have interactive exhibits, a “how it’s made” section, and a walkthrough of the history of cast iron. And, of course, the world’s largest iron skillet.

The Bush’s Baked Bean Museum needs to create some kind of partnership here. After all, what’s one of the best ways to cook out in the range under the moonlight?

Use your cast iron and break out your beans as a good ‘ol cowboy would. In addition, the two museums are only a little over two hours from each other. It would make for an interesting road trip!

But let’s get back to the largest iron skillet. After its amazing awe-inspiring trip from Alabama, the 8-foot, 14,360-pound skillet, entered the museum to its final place of installation. Now, who is going to be the person who has to take care of it?

Although cast iron fans believe the cookware is worth every careful step it demands in aftercare, dishwasher fans and air fryer owners tend to feign annoyance. But, everyone loves to eat. And cast iron is beneficial in so many ways. Imagine how wonderful the largest iron skillet would be!

From the fact that iron is absorbed into the food every time you use it, to the idea that after each use, cast iron gets better and better seasoned this destination is a can’t miss. It’s because of these facts, and the largest iron skillet, that you can’t miss the Lodge Museum of Cast Iron
