Synonymous with the summer season, hot dogs and popsicles have become staples at family gatherings. Now, these two favorites are coming together for a delightful, albeit surprising treat. Oscar Mayer, a subsidiary of the Kraft Heinz Company, has launched the first-ever Cold Dog. Described as bun-derfully odd and delicious frozen pop, the food company’s latest creation tastes just like the beloved cold cut producer’s popular wiener.

The Cold Dog is the brainchild of Oscar Mayer’s “Stupid or Genius” campaign that focused on all the wonderfully odd ways to enjoy the iconic wiener beyond grilling. That’s when the concept of a weiner-flavored pop sparked a sizzling social media debate on Instagram. While the summery snack may be polarizing, tens of thousands of fans relished the idea of a hot dog-flavored frozen pop. The masses eventually bestowed the invention with the “genius” moniker so the brand made it a reality.

To make the Cold Dog a reality, Oscar Mayer is teaming up with Popbar – a premium frozen desserts company known for handcrafted gelato on a stick. The unique frozen pop boasts refreshing and smokey, umami notes of the iconic wiener, topped with a signature swirl of mustard. Hot dog enthusiasts can taste the frank-tastic creation at select Popbar locations for just $2.00. The new invention is available in Long Beach, New York City, Alpharetta, Georgia, and New Orleans while supplies last, according to the food maker’s website.

Speaking about the launch, Oscar Mayer spokesperson Anne Field explained why the unconventional team-up just had to be done. “After the overwhelming fan excitement for our beloved Cold Dog, it was a no-brainer to make this hot dog-inspired frozen pop a reality,” she said, said in a press release. “For more than 130 years, our company has been sparking smiles and bringing levity into everyday moments, and we are thrilled to bring fans another wonderfully odd way to enjoy our iconic wiener while beating the summer heat,” Field continued.

To celebrate the “genius” Cold Dog’s debut, Oscar Mayer’s iconic 27-foot hot dog on wheels will get an icy makeover for food lovers to sample the cold creation. Fittingly outfitted as a frozen pop truck, the Wienermobile will be decked out with frosted windows, icicle-inspired decorations, and more as it travels the hot dog highways to popular summertime destinations in New York City and the Jersey Shore through August 27th. Interestingly, this isn’t the first Kraft Heinz product that created a buzz for its strangeness. In January, Oscar Mayer released a bologna-looking face mask that quickly sold out on Amazon. But the product wasn’t actually a slimy piece of meat. Instead, the food maker partnered with Korean skincare company Seoul Mamas to create a hydrating and restoring hydrogel mask that promotes skin elasticity, by improving hydration and moisture retention, CNN Business reported at the time. But unlike the Cold Dogs, the tan-colored masks were not edible and came with a large warning on the packaging telling folks not to eat the bologna masks.
