Often, when a person passes away, people talk about their unfinished business – projects or dreams they had hoped to complete in their final years.

In this article, unfinished business takes the form of movies and TV shows that were in production when one of the cast members passed away. Keep reading to learn about how the cast and crew went on to finish these projects and released them after some tragic and untimely deaths.

Richard Harris – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Richard Harris had a long career on stage and in film and was considered one of Ireland’s finest actors. Sadly, Harris passed away after filming his role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, a few months before the film was released to the public. Actor Michael Gambon took over the role of Albus Dumbledore for the franchise’s subsequent films.

Carrie Fisher – Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Carrie Fisher was beloved by generations of fans for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. The actress reprised her role when the series was rebooted in the 2010s. Prior to her sudden death on December 27, 2016, Fisher had completed filming all her scenes for The Last Jedi.

For the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker, filmmakers relied on previously unused footage and outtakes from the other films to complete Fisher’s part.

Natalie Wood – Brainstorm

Natalie Wood got her start in Hollywood at the age of four when she was cast in A Miracle on 34th Street. From there, she would go on to star in Rebel Without A Cause alongside James Dean as a teenager.

Wood’s talent and beauty were unmistakable onscreen and she was considered one of the industry’s best actresses. The Hollywood star died under suspicious circumstances on November 29, 1981, while on a boat with her husband, Robert Wagner. Wood drowned, but it remains unclear how she ended up in the water in the first place.

Her final film role as Karen Brace in the sci-fi movie Brainstorm was released to the public in September 1983. Her death put the production in limbo until the studio agreed to complete it with Wood’s sister standing in for the remaining scenes.

James Gandolfini – Enough Said and The Drop

Best known to the public for his role as Tony Soprano on the hit TV show The Sopranos, James Gandolfini died suddenly of a heart attack while vacationing with his family in Italy on June 19, 2013. Later that year, Gandolfini’s film, Enough Said, co-starring Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, was released. His final movie, The Drop, came out about a year after he died in 2014.

Whitney Houston – Sparkle

Months after her sudden passing, Whitney Houston’s final movie role in Sparkle premiered. Houston rose to fame during the 1980s and 1990s and was considered one of the most successful female singers in history. Besides music, she had memorable roles in films like The Bodyguard and Cinderella.

Houston was also an executive producer on Sparkle, and the film was dedicated to her memory.

Sam Neill – The Last Resort and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

Sam Neill was best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film franchise. The actor died at the age of 78 on July 13, 2026, from pneumonia. His death caught many by surprise because he was still actively working in the film industry up until his sudden passing.

His final two projects – The Last Resort and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova – will be released in 2027.

Chadwick Boseman – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Chadwick Boseman rose to the top of the A-list when he was cast as T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sadly, behind the scenes, Boseman was battling late-stage colon cancer and died in 2020 at the age of 43.

His final film role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was released after his death and earned the young star a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2021, Boseman’s final performances as T’Challa were released in the Marvel animated series What If…?

Catherine O’Hara – The Shadow King

Catherine O’Hara was considered one of the best female comedic actresses of all time, with highly acclaimed roles in film and television. O’Hara died on January 30, 2026, from a pulmonary embolism and complications from rectal cancer.

Her death was unexpected, as O’Hara was set to reprise her role in the second season of the hit show The Studio. It’s unclear how writers will address the actress’s death on the show. O’Hara’s final film role is a voice-over performance in the upcoming animated film The Shadow King, directed by Henry Selick. Its release date has not been announced.

Heath Ledger – The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus

Heath Ledger was in the midst of shooting The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus at the time of his sudden passing. Directed by Terry Gilliam, the surreal fantasy film was in limbo following the actor’s death.

Actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell stepped in to help complete the movie, with each actor playing Ledger’s character in different variations. The three actors not only saved Ledger’s last film, but they also donated their salaries to the late actor’s young daughter.

Philip Seymour Hoffman – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Philip Seymour Hoffman had about seven days left of shooting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 when he died on February 2, 2014. Instead of using CGI to complete his character’s story, the director decided to rewrite the script to explain Plutarch Heavensbee’s absence. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 was released on November 20, 2015, about a year and a half after Hoffman passed away.

James Dean – Rebel Without A Cause and Giant

James Dean is one of the most recognizable faces in classic Hollywood, but the young actor only starred in a handful of films before his tragic death at the age of 24. Dean died on September 30, 1955, while driving his Porsche on his way to a car race. Following his death, two of his final projects were released to the public: Rebel Without A Cause and Giant.

He was nominated posthumously for Best Actor at the 1957 Academy Awards for his role in Giant.

Chris Farley – Almost Heroes

As a cast member on Saturday Night Live, Chris Farley became a fan-favorite during the 1990s, starring in some of the show’s most iconic sketches. In a surprise shake-up, Farley was fired from the show along with other popular cast members. However, he quickly got to work on a number of film projects he had in development.

After his death on December 18, 1997, Farley’s final film, Almost Heroes, was finished and released in 1998. Farley had also been cast as the voice of Shrek, but after he died, filmmakers decided to recast the role with Mike Myers. Farley’s recorded dialogue was released along with some of the original storyboard art for his version of Shrek and can be found on YouTube.

Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger died on January 22, 2008, at just 28 years old. The acclaimed actor’s death came as a total shock to the public, especially since his upcoming role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was highly anticipated by fans. Ledger had completed shooting all his scenes for The Dark Knight before his death.

The film opened later that year to rave reviews and broke box office records. Ledger also received a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film.

Marilyn Monroe – Something’s Gotta Give

The death of Marilyn Monroe was considered one of the defining moments of the 1960s and signalled the end of one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.

At the time of her death, Monroe was in the middle of filming Something’s Gotta Give. The entire production of the film was tumultuous as Monroe’s mental state deteriorated. After her death, the film was reworked with the remaining cast and retitled Move Over, Darling.

As for Marilyn’s footage, it was released as a short film and was also used in a few documentaries about the actress’s life after her passing.

Anton Yelchin – Star Trek Beyond

Anton Yelchin was an up-and-coming actor in Hollywood with impressive roles in Only Lovers Left Alive, Like Crazy, and the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise. The actor passed away in 2016 during a tragic accident at his home involving his car.

The young actor’s role in Star Trek Beyond was completed before his death and appeared unaltered in the final cut of the movie. The movie was also dedicated to Yelchin’s memory. Besides Star Trek Beyond, a number of other projects featuring Yelchin were released posthumously between 2017 and 2018.

John Candy – Wagons East and Canadian Bacon

Comedic actor John Candy died in March 1994 while filming the movie Wagons East. It is believed that the actor suffered a fatal heart attack in his sleep. Wagons East was nearly completed, so the production crew used body doubles, CGI, and rewrote the script to finish the movie. It was released a few months after Candy’s death.

His final film role was in Canadian Bacon. Even though Canadian Bacon wrapped filming some time before Candy died, production issues delayed the film from being released until 1995.

Paul Walker – Furious 7

Actor Paul Walker died in a car accident on November 30, 2013, before he completed filming Furious 7. Filmmakers used a combination of archival footage and CGI, and had Walker’s brothers stand in as body doubles to complete the film. Furious 7 premiered on April 3, 2015, and featured a peaceful send-off for Walker’s character.

Luke Perry – Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood

If you grew up in the ’90s, chances are good that you remember Luke Perry from the hit show Beverly Hills, 90210. Perry was enjoying something of a career comeback in the 2010s when he was cast as Fred Andrews on the Archie comics revival show Riverdale. Tragically, Perry passed away on March 2, 2019, after suffering two strokes.

Perry’s final film role in Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood was released on July 26, 2019. The film was dedicated to his memory.

James Van Der Beek – The Gates and Elle

Actor James Van Der Beek broke out onto the scene with his main role on Dawson’s Creek. Over the years, Van Der Beek had numerous roles in film and television and continued working even after he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Sadly, the actor lost his battle with cancer in February 2026. At the time of his death, Van Der Beek had two projects that were awaiting release. His final film role in The Gates was released in March 2026, and his final television role as Dean Wilson on the Amazon television series Elle was released in July 2026.

Eric Dane – Euphoria

Eric Dane announced to the public that he had been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in April 2025. At the time, the actor was still filming the third season of HBO’s Euphoria. Unfortunately, Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, before the show’s final season premiered. Dane’s final film, Family Secrets, is also slated for a posthumous release.

Rob Reiner – Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness

Actor and director Rob Reiner died suddenly in December 2025. It is believed that he and his wife were homicide victims. Their deaths came as a complete shock, as both Rob and Michelle Reiner were still active in Hollywood, working on creative projects at the time of their sudden passings

Prior to his death, Reiner had guest-starred on the acclaimed show The Bear. He earned a posthumous Emmy nomination for his appearance. His final on-screen role was in Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, which came out in early 2026.

Jill Clayburgh – Bridesmaids

In her final film role, Jill Clayburgh played Annie’s (Kristen Wiig’s) mom in Bridesmaids. Clayburgh passed away in November 2010 following a 20-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Sadly, the actress never got to see the immense success that Bridesmaids generated. Bridesmaids premiered on May 13, 2011, and became one of the top-grossing comedy films of all time.

Clayburgh received numerous posthumous award nominations for her role in the film’s ensemble cast.

Stanley Kubrick – Eyes Wide Shut

Stanley Kubrick was one of Hollywood’s most talented and eccentric directors. Over the course of his life, he directed 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket, among other celebrated films.

Kubrick’s final film was Eyes Wide Shut, a psychological drama starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. The director died in March 1999, a few days after presenting the film’s final cut to the cast and some family members. He never saw its public release, which occurred in July 1999.

Adrienne Shelly – Waitress

Adrienne Shelly was an actress, screenwriter, and director. Her best-known work is the film Waitress, which she wrote, directed, and starred in. Waitress gained cult film status and later became a popular Broadway musical.

Sadly, Shelly never got to see the success of her final project. After production wrapped for Waitress, she was the victim of a homicide in November 2006. Waitress premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2007 and got a wider release in May 2007.

Bruce Lee – Enter The Dragon

Bruce Lee’s most popular film, Enter the Dragon, was released after the martial artist and actor’s death on July 20, 1973. Lee had been diagnosed with convulsive disorder, which caused seizures, headaches, and brain swelling in the months before his death. He died in Hong Kong of cerebral edema triggered by a reaction to medication. He was only 32 years old.

Enter the Dragon was released six days after Lee’s death. Besides being a box office success, it is widely considered one of the greatest martial arts movies ever made. A number of Lee’s other projects were also released posthumously after his death, including a movie version of the TV series, The Green Hornet.

Brandon Lee – The Crow

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee, also had an untimely death before the release of his final project. Lee was cast as the lead character in The Crow, a supernatural superhero film. While filming a scene where Lee’s character was supposed to be shot, the actor was struck by a real bullet lodged in a prop gun instead of a blank as intended. Lee died hours after the accident.

With his family’s blessing, filmmakers completed and released The Crow after Lee’s death. The film was met with critical praise and was a box office success.

Clark Gable – The Misfits

Clark Gable was one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men during the Golden Age. The actor enjoyed a long and successful career on screen and won an Oscar for the 1935 film It Happened One Night.

Gable’s final film role was as an aging cowboy in The Misfits, which also starred Marilyn Monroe. It premiered in 1961 after the actor’s death from a heart attack.

River Phoenix – Dark Blood

In his short career, River Phoenix made a memorable impact on audiences with roles in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Stand By Me, and My Own Private Idaho. The young actor died suddenly on October 31, 1993, outside of the popular Hollywood nightclub The Viper Room.

At the time, Phoenix was on a production break from the film Dark Blood. After his death, the film remained unfinished for nearly two decades. Finally, in 2012, the film was released to a small audience after the director re-edited the existing footage and completed the project.
