What we know about Rob Reiner’s death, as well as other celebrity deaths in 2025

By Media Feed | Published

Every day brings news with it and some days bring more of it than others. For that reason, a celebrity death that may grip the world in shock on one day may fall by the wayside on days when matters with more severe world ramifications take priority.

As such, it’s very possible for stars who meant a lot to people to pass away without many of them realizing it until much later. As such — and as morbid as it may seem — there’s a value in chronicling and honoring the lives of those who passed away this year after making an impact on so many people.

Rob Reiner first came to prominence for his role on Norman Lear’s groundbreaking 1970s sitcom All in the Family, in which he played Michael Stivic — a liberal counterpoint to Archie Bunker’s more conservative role.

From there, Reiner embarked on a career that spanned more than half a century. In addition to acting roles, he also directed iconic films like This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. Reiner was 78 when he was killed.

While his films often tended to be cult favorites and respected arthouse movies than major blockbusters, David Lynch’s incredible influence on surreal, experimental filmmaking cannot be overstated.

His series Twin Peaks and his most highly regarded films like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Eraserhead were at once romantic, gritty, hilarious, and deeply disturbing, and downright confusing in a unique way that was often imitated but never duplicated.

Although his filmmaking had long slowed down by the time of his passing, he had a fairly public persona even in his final years, appearing through online “Weather Report” messages and cutting a grandfatherly if eccentric figure.

A lifelong smoker, he fell to complications of emphysema four days before his 79th birthday. More specifically, he experienced cardiac arrest with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and dehydration as underlying causes.

An Appropriate Tribute

After evacuating his home in the wake of the Southern California wildfires — yet another contributing factor to the decline of his health — he passed away at his daughter’s house in Los Angeles. He was cremated and his ashes were buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Shortly after Lynch’s passing, his family released a statement that perfectly captured his outlook on the world and life. As they wrote, “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'”

Once upon a time, Bob Uecker was a major league catcher. Although he was considered a below-average hitter with an career average of .200, he was also considered a strong defensive player by the time his playing days ended in 1967.

However, Uecker’s better-known contributions to Major League Baseball saw him serve as the Milwaukee Brewers’ play-by-play commentator for 54 seasons. This made him a highly respected veteran broadcaster with over a half-century of experience in that career path alone.

By that point, he had faced over a decade of significant health struggles, as he missed several weeks of the 2010 baseball season to undergo heart surgery, which saw doctors replace his aortic valve and a portion of his aortic root. Another operation would be needed that October to repair a tear where the valve was replaced.

The Hardest Diagnosis

About a year before his retirement, Uecker was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer. Uecker’s only experienced about three months of post-retirement life before the end.

The cancer claimed Uecker’s life at his home in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, ten days before his 91st birthday. Fans left heartfelt tributes to him like the ones shown here outside of American Family Field.

Although Lorenzo’s career as a record producer extended far beyond his heyday, most who recognize his name at all will recall that he was the co-founder of Murder Inc. Records.

Although he’s credited with elevating Jay-Z’s career and discovering DMX, his most famous association with Ja Rule and Ashanti saw Murder Inc. soar to the top of the rap game in the early 2000s.

Lorenzo lived with diabetes throughout his final years, and was prompted to change his dietary habits after experiencing a minor stroke in connection with the disease in early 2024.

However, it seems this measure was taken too late, as another stroke would claim his life at the age of 54.

An accomplished singer and pianist, Roberta Flack was known for her eclectic blend of jazz, R&B, pop, and folk music that influenced the birth of the “quiet storm” subgenre.

Although she had multiple number-one singles and was the first person to win back-to-back Record Of The Year Grammy awards, her most enduring classic is the hit “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

According to her manager Suzanne Koga, she passed away from cardiac arrest on her way to a Manhattan hospital at the age of 88.

It’s hard to encapsulate how legendary and long-running Gene Hackman’s acting career was, but his significant roles in classics like 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, 1971’s The French Connection, 1974’s The Conversation, The Superman film series, 1989’s Mississippi Burning, 1992’s Unforgiven, and 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums all speak for themselves.

Although it’s not unheard of for veteran actors to keep working well into their 80s, Hackman made the decision to retire for good in 2004 after appearing in the Ray Romano vehicle Welcome To Mooseport.

In 1991, Hackman married classical pianist Betsy Arakawa and made a home with her in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Featured in Architectural Digest in 1990, the estate sits on a twelve-acre hilltop and overlooks a Colorado Mountain range.

Although the couple was fairly private about their relationship, their marriage lasted at least 33 years until both spouses passed away at what appeared to be the same time.

According to NBC News, Hackman and Arakawa were both found deceased in their Santa Fe home along with their dog. Hackman was 95 years old, while Arakawa was 64.

On February 26, 2025, deputies of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office were called to the home at 1:45 pm after concerned neighbors requested a welfare check.

Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies were officially identified at 12:30 am on February 27 and the sheriff’s office that no exact cause of death has been determined at the time of this writing.

However, authorities expect some more insight into the matter will follow after what the organization described as an “active and ongoing” investigation concludes.

No Foul Play Is Suspected

Although the couple’s cause of death remains a mystery, there are already more clues to the nature of the mystery than it may seem.

As far as authorities can determine, there is no evidence to suggest that a person came into their home for any malicious purpose, nor is there anything to suggest any violence took place in the household itself. Thus, the sheriff’s office stated that they do not suspect foul play.

There Are Reasonable Conclusions To Draw

Given that both Hackman and Arakawa seemed to pass away at roughly the same time and their dog died with them with no evidence of violence, it seems likely that something had gone seriously wrong with the house itself.

According to CBS News, however, both of them tested negative for carbon monoxide. The dog’s fate was found to result from the fact that it was trapped in a kennel or crate during the extended period following the couple’s deaths.

Although investigators have yet to determine a cause of death for either Hackman or Arakawa, they had determined that Hackman’s pacemaker stopped functioning nine days before the couple was discovered.

Based on the mummification of their hands and feet among other physical signs, it seems likely that they had passed away over a week before they were discovered.

Tributes From Hackman’s Peers

In the day after the couple’s demise, heartfelt social media posts poured in from actors ranging from Slumdog Millionaire star Anil Kapoor and George Takei, the latter crediting Hackman for being able to play anyone.

Industry figures who had worked directly with Hackman also shared their well-wishes, with The Conversation director Francis Ford Coppola saying, “Gene Hackman a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity. I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.”

One of the most touching tributes, however, came from Hackman’s Superman co-star, Valerie Perrine, who called him a genius and one of the greatest to ever “grace the silver screen.”

As the Eve Teschmacher actress added, “His performances are legendary. His talent will be missed. Goodbye my sweet Lex Till we meet again.”

Those who aren’t familiar with Carl Dean are doing well to honor his wishes, as People reported that Dolly Parton’s husband of 59 years was an intensely private person. However, Parton’s beloved status was such that as soon as news of his passing spread into the world, the outpouring of grief was swift and overwhelming.

Parton thanked the well-wishers for their prayers and sympathy but also asked for privacy for the family as they mourn Dean. Dean passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 82. No cause of death was given.
